In this workshop, we’ll explore the art of writing about food across multiple genres, including fiction, poetry, and memoir. Through hands-on exercises and engaging discussions, we'll weave sensory details and personal experiences into our writing.
Bring your favorite holiday dish to share as we indulge in a delightful afternoon of food and words, nurturing our creativity and celebrating the joy of culinary storytelling.

Outline
Appetizer Introductions: Name, favorite food, writing genre
Word Salad Culinary words
- Exercise: Write for five minutes about a food-related memory incorporating some or all of these words.
Cheese Plate Examples from different genres
- Discussion about the examples
- Exercise: Write for ten minutes either reworking the previous exercise or starting a new piece emulating something from one of the examples.
Main Course All five senses
- Exercise: Write for fifteen minutes describing a favorite culinary experience or an imagined one involving all five senses.
Dessert Pictures of dessert-related ingredients and words.
- Exercise: Write for ten minutes, layering the images, words, and anything from previous exercises.
- Invite people to share from any of the exercises.

Jessica Trujillo is a fiction writer and former pastry chef from Tacoma. Her work has been featured in Halfway Down the Stairs and The Weekly Volcano.
