Antibody by Zoe Shelton

There are two types of immunity:
one that snaps and one that lags
but neither of them will keep you
from falling off that bike.

Behind the barn
slinking cats chasing field mice
that some girls hold to their cheek
while you throw up in your hands.

Dip your body into the creek
or crawl deeper into the brush,
while the others wonder why you’re not searching
even though you’ve been playing seeker all day.

Exit the bushes to find
that the parents have been calling
because the sun is nearly gone
and your knee is still bleeding.

So you ride your bike as fast as can
and try to outrun the light
knowing it will always catch you.
