Green Banana Girl by Cat Melaunie
Once upon a time, there was a girl banana
One bunch all the same
Her mother banana, father banana,
and brother, the odd plantain.
This banana lived in a small fruit town
Filled with fruit that all lived the same
The Apple Couple and Orange Families
All had the same name.
This Girl Banana thought she stood out.
She wasn’t like the rest.
Turns out her skin was a little green
Not a bright yellow zest.
Green Girl Banana did her best
To fit in with her fruit basket
No matter what she did
Her difference, she couldn’t mask it.
One day Father Banana left
And Girl Banana didn’t know why
Then Mother Banana turned brown
And eventually died.
The slightly green Girl Banana
Was already a weird fruit
She was sent to live with a family of Kiwi
Who’d already adopted a bamboo shoot
Green Banana wasn’t sure
How she was going to make it.
Her fruit bowl was turned upside down
So she began to fake it.
She pretended she was Kiwi
She acted like an Melon
She traipsed like a Pineapple
But the lie wasn’t sellin.
She was Green Banana through and through
But her sadness turned her brown.
She couldn’t understand
Why her bunch let her down
She stopped growing and pretending.
She was relegated to the freezer
She stays frozen in her sadness
From being a Fruit Pleaser
Green Banana slowly realized
She had to save herself
When the freezer door was open
She threw herself off the shelf
A lovely person picked her up
And put her in a bowl with sugar and flour
The Sweet Banana knew
This would be her finest hour
Green bananas often turn brown
And sometimes the sadness spreads
But if you find the right person
Then you can be sweet banana bread.
